Bicycling on Long Island
Cycling on Long Island is a sport done year round. If you are new to the
area, stick to the defined bike trails, because traffic can get busy
on the main roads, and some neighborhoods don't encourage biking.
There are several bicycle clubs on Long Island. They welcome new members as
well as visitors. Some of these clubs and additional Long Island cycling
sites are:
Each club has monthly newsletters which include ride schedules. There is
also an "Umbrella" organization called The Paumanok bicycle club. The
clubs also sponsor at least one major charity/promotional ride during the
year.
For the casual rider, here are some spots to check out:
- The Long Beach Boardwalk - A level 4 mile ride along the Ocean
- Eisenhower Park - 2 miles of interwoven paths
- Bethpage State Park - Massapequa preserve bike path,
16 miles round-trip
- Cedar Creek Park - Jones Beach Bike Path,
9 miles round-trip
There is a clearly marked route on side streets connecting the Bethpage
Park and Cedar Creek paths, resulting in a 33 mile round trip.
Fire Island
Fire Island is a popular summer vacation spot, and can be accessed via
ferry or via a dirt path and beach from the
Robert Moses State Park parking field 5.
Mountain bikes are recommended due to sand. However, there are
interconnected routes with a hard surface between the villages of Kismet
to Atlantique, although a bell is required. Other parts of Fire Island
have restrictions on bicycling, so consult a guide book to the area before
going anywhere else on the island.
Mountain Biking
The Green belt trail runs from Cold Spring harbor to Massapequa, From
Bethpage south, it parrallels the Bethpage bike path. Bethpage State
Park also has several miles of trails within it borders. Some
sections north of the park can get dangerous, be be careful.
We would like to thank Ian Stovall for the information provided about
cycling on the Island.
